Firedance

$18.00

Although we're not usually fans of synthesized music, we're ready to admit that it's beautiful when the mix is right. Omar Faruk Tekbilek once again joins Brian Keane for a journey beyond the Turkey of Suleyman and into the reaches of North Africa and the Middle East. Sometimes quiet and meditative, sometimes a whirlwind of sound, this recording is like the telling of a good story.
Instrumentation: Baglama, guitar, bendir, nai, kaval, oud, doumbec, tambourine, zurna, vocals, zils and synthesizer.

1.  Somewhere in the Sahara 2:30 Slow - nay flute and bells. Builds into next song.
2. Oglan Boyun 5:11 Fast - a traditional tune.
3. A Call to Prayer 5:20 You guessed it, even though it's a commercial recording, it's best not to dance to it. Relax and enjoy the meditation.
4. Desert Twighlight 5:11 Slow - sounds kind of sad to me, but very pretty.
5. A Passage East 3:06 9/8 Kashlima - not a rhythm we dance to, but it's a great listen or solo piece.
6. Song of the Pharoahs 5:57 Slow - a FatChanceBellyDance classic, we've been using this song since 1989 when the CD came out! Smokey slow with several textured sections, a very versatile song.
7. Beledy 5:27 Slow to fast.
8. Fire Dance 5:27 Slow to fast.
9. Ask 6:24 Slow - guitar and ney flute.
10. Village Song 4:16 9/8 Kashlima - great listen or solo piece.
11. Modern Mystics 2:59 Slow - oud and guitar.
12. Sahara (reprise) 1:16 Slow - evocative, skillful guitar.
13. Spirit of the Ancestors 5:31 Slow - frame drum, ney flute and vocals. Though not a call to prayer, it does invoke the name of Allah, so might be better to enjoy privately.
14. Halay 5:56 Slow to fast - very bouncy and uplifting.
