Henna (mehndi) is a natural dye, made from the powdered leaves of the henna plant. For centuries it has been used in India, North Africa and the Middle East to decorate the hands and feet of women for auspicious occasions. Recently, in fashionable culture, henna has gained popularity as a temporary 'tattoo' that lasts a week to three weeks before wearing off.
